Baby Update - 37 weeks

I am officially on the schedule to see the doctor on a weekly basis now. Last week we went to an appointment and learned that the baby is doing well and her heart beat is strong. She is already facing head down and the doctor explained that she will probably stay that way until delivery but it is possible that she may move out of there. I am still feeling pretty good, I just get tired now and again and when I do it is hard to get over it even when I rest. I am wrapping things up at work and getting ready to go on maternity leave soon. We should have some pictures of the nursery to post pretty soon as we are getting close to finishing that as well. I will post another update next week. :)

Sign of the times...

If you live in So Cal you are probably familiar with 97.1 fm - a classic rock station turned FM talk many years ago. It used to be the home of Howard Stern before he went to satellite radio, blah, blah. Well sometime ago (not even sure when, maybe the years I spent in traffic driving to Fullerton for grad school, I don't know) I stumbled upon this station, specifically Tom Leykis (shocked some of you may be if you are familiar with him and his philosophies about men, women, etc.) and I was hooked. I would listen to him driving home at night; Frosty, Heidi and Frank in the middle of the day; and when Howard left, Adam Carolla and Teresa Strasser started the morning show. As a sign of the times, 97.1 FM decided to change formats to add another Top 40, hip-hop station to the airwaves in LA which are in such short supply (note the sarcasm). It makes sense because it is way cheaper to run a music station than pay the talent and all of the producers, etc. for an ALL talk radio station.

Anyway, the reason for my post on this topic (maybe it's the hormones making me overly emotional again!) but yesterday was the first official weekday that I was not able to listen to any of the shows I used to catch while in the car (which seems like all the time!). These people are all so talented and hilarious and I will miss having access to them in one convenient place. To top it off the midday show had to put together this video of their "last day" on air and if you go to the website: http://www.frostyheidiandfrank.com/ I swear you will cry even if you have no idea who these people are. They did their show together for 7+ years and Frosty and Frank have worked together for many more than that. I still have 97.1 programed in my car but can't bring myself to stay on the station for more than 5 seconds. I can't commit to another station as my usual yet...I guess that means I am still grieving! :( Thanks for letting me vent, it's good for the grieving process. Haha!

Baby Update

On President's Day we went back to the doctor for a check up and everything is going great with the baby. I measured equal to how far along I was at the time - 34 weeks and she has a strong heartbeat. I am still feeling pretty good just noticing how it is getting harder to cart this extra weight, blood, fluid, etc. around. I have a few more weeks of work and am looking forward to wrapping things up there and totally focusing on home and the baby.

Last weekend we went to Vegas to celebrate Marcos' birthday, Valentine's Day and to have a little "babymoon". We had a great time and walked all over the strip (Marcos thinks we walked about 3-4 miles last Saturday!) checking out all of the things that have changed since the last time either of us were there. We had a great time on his birthday and Valentine's day and it was great to have a little getaway together. The bottom picture was taken when we returned from our Valentine's/Marcos' birthday dinner. We took another picture 4 weeks ago and you can tell how much my belly has rounded out in just a short period of time. Notice my extensive "going out" maternity wardrobe! :)

Baby Shower

Two weeks ago we had my first baby shower at our house. We had a plan in case it rained and good thing we did because the days leading up to the shower were so cold and rainy. We set up a tent in the backyard and everything ended up coming out beautifully. I had a great time and am so thankful to my mother-in-law, Anna Marie, and my sisters-in-law, Melissa and Monique, for putting together such a wonderful event. Here are some pictures from the day:

Monique, Julia, & Melissa

Cousin Debbie (newly engaged - she's glowing!!) & Anna Marie

Grandma & Anna Marie

Aunt Irene & my Mom, Pat

Marcos came to check out the end of the gift opening, he spent the day with our dads and some of the other guys. Also pictured, Cousin Kim & Julie

Can you say emotional???

I hadn't really noticed that being pregnant made me more emotional until a little adventure last week. Marcos and I returned home from Lamaze one evening last week and two of the little boys in the neighborhood were outside out house waiting for us. (Marcos has befriended them so I figured they were just waiting to say hi to him). It turns out their visit had a specific purpose...they had found a little kitten in a box that had been abandoned right outside the gate to our community. Of course I immediately lifted the little one out of the box and held it shaking, purring little body. She was so cute and all black from head to toe. It was late, the shelter was closed and neither of these little boys could keep the kitten at their house so....operation kitten rescue went into effect. Marcos is quite the pro considering Gracie is basically his first cat.

The boys left and we got her all set up inside the house. The plan was to keep her overnight then take her to the shelter in the morning. That night as I was trying to go to sleep I had to pray that we made the right decision given the predicament we were just put in. Most people would not think twice about such a thing but as some of you know I have had cats my whole life most of whom have been rescued in one way or another. The predicament was we have a baby on the way which is time consuming enough and Gracie seems to be very happy being an only kitten that I was worried how she would react as well. That night she stayed out of our room as if to say I know what you two are doing (that strange cat in the bathroom downstairs) and I don't like it one bit!!

Now for the extreme emotional part....the next morning before Marcos left for work I told him that I thought about it and that now would not be the right time for us to keep the kitten. He agreed and admitted that he was afraid that I was going to ask him if we could (hmmm, does his fear indicate that I possibly could have had my way??) So I got ready and grabbed the cat carrier and headed to the shelter with this well rested and fed little kitten. She began to cry so loud once we were in the car and all I could think about was how she was probably making the same cries when the low life's drove off the night before after abandoning her in the bushes. How could someone do such a thing? That was all I could think about. So, I get to the shelter and they are not open to the public yet but one of the ladies was in the office. I began speaking to her through the window explaining that kids in the neighborhood found this kitten, etc. and could barely get any of my sentence out because I was BAWLING!!!

The lady at the shelter was so nice and just kept saying it's ok, and don't cry but I was a mess. I felt so bad telling her the story of this poor little kitten and how I wanted to help but just could not at the time. So picture this pregnant chick standing outside the animal shelter crying her eyes out as if I were handing over one of my own pets or loved ones for that matter. I could not believe how I just couldn't control myself. The lady explained that they would scan her for one of those Avid tags that identifies the original owner but that the shelter would take care of the little kitten. I came home and found Gracie and held her and gave her a ton of kisses until I was finally able to compose myself. So is that what they mean by being overly emotional when you're pregnant? Oh and by the way, Marcos called later that day to be sure I had delivered the kitten to the shelter and was not still holding onto her at our house! :)

In Loving Memory

Yesterday we attended the funeral service for the Ortega family whose lives were tragically taken by the shooting in Covina on Christmas Eve. Terry (Reza) Ortega and her husband Jim were two of the nine people who died that evening. They are first cousins of my father-in-law so we were there to show our respects for the family. It was a beautiful service and it was truly amazing to hear the stories of what a wonderful family they are and to see the outpouring of support from family, friends, and the community.

Cardinal Mahony presided over the mass along with priests from local churches that were also connected with the family. It was a beautiful service that concluded at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Covina. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who passed and their families.

Appointment Update

Wednesday we went to the doctor for a check-up and everything looks great! My fundal height (size of my belly) grows consistently at a rate of about 2cm per month the doctor said. I had to get a Rhogam shot as well because I am Rh negative, meaning that because of my blood type (O-) I have to receive this antibody to ensure that in the event my blood were to mix with the baby's blood I would not start producing anti-bodies to reject the baby...or something like that, that answer sounds pretty smart I think. :)

I tested negative for gestational diabetes following blood work that I did a couple weeks ago which is also a good thing! Otherwise things are looking great and for the next 6-8 weeks I will be headed to the doctor every other week and then it will be weekly after that. It's hard to believe how quickly this is all flying by.

As I write this Marcos is busy assembling the crib to go with some of the furniture that we received from his parents as a gift for the baby. We are so grateful and so impressed with how nice everything looks. Once we have some more pieces put together I will post some pics of the nursery. Also, tonight we are headed out for his sisters' birthday and we will be sure to get a good shot of my 30 week belly to post on here. Have a great weekend! :)
